Carnival songs

Faschings-Lieder is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 11).

prehistory

His successful debut at Casino Dommayer in Hietzing was followed by positive press coverage, but that did not change the fact that Johann's father continued to dominate the Viennese waltz scene and could be found in almost all renowned venues. Johann Strauss Sohn only had the relatively small Casino Dommayer and the somewhat run-down Strüßl halls in the theater complex in Josephstadt .

In these two places (Hietzing and Josephstadt), Strauss Sohn, as carnival regent, had the right to hold a charity ball.

performance

It took place on Shrove Monday , February 3, 1845 in the Strüßl halls, the reaction of the press was initially restrained. It was not until February 8 that a report appeared in the collector that described the benefit concert as original and a place of joy and serenity. In addition, the concert was very well attended and the decoration was brilliant. On the whole, however, the coverage was a bit far removed from great enthusiasm.

Publication of the waltz

The publisher Mechetti was also in no hurry to publish this waltz. It was not until almost a year later, in January 1846, that the piano reduction appeared, and the orchestral parts were probably never printed.
