Fiber seal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fiber seal (also fiber seal ) is a flat, disk-shaped seal that is used in many technical areas.

Components and function

The fibers can consist of various materials such as paper , hemp and various plastics . The seals are porous and compressible to a certain extent, whereby the compression must be partially reversible in order to achieve adequate sealing behavior and for installation and removal. In order to fulfill their sealing function, the following requirements must be met:

  • High installation surface pressure
  • Flat sealing surfaces
  • Rigid sealing surfaces

Older fiber seals can also contain asbestos and are therefore subject to the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances , TRGS 519 and the Asbestos Directive. Disassembly of these seals is only permitted by experts, reassembly is prohibited.

Areas of application

A large area of application for fiber seals is the plumbing and heating construction trade. There they are used as a seal for fittings such as water taps , pipe fittings , line shut-off valves , line regulating valves , etc., which are not sealed conically but with flat sealing using a sealing washer. They are also used when connecting pressure reducers to gas cylinders such as B. Oxygen bottles for autogenous welding . Fiber seals are suitable for sealing against liquid and gaseous substances . They are very inexpensive and durable.

Sizes

The seals are available in various sizes. Common sizes of plumbing and heating craft are in American inch sizes ( inch specified) dimensions (3/8 ", 1/2", 3/4 ", 1", 11/4 ", 11/2" 2 "etc. .).

Customs designation Dimensions in mm (inner Ø X outer Ø)
