wedding day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wedding day is the anniversary of the wedding , the wedding anniversary . Different wedding days are given different names together with the duration of the marriage in the German-speaking area: The most famous anniversaries are the silver wedding (25 years), the golden wedding (50 years) and the diamond wedding (60 years). Golden weddings can be traced back to 1600.

In the course of time, names were assigned to many other anniversaries, some of which enjoy a certain distribution, some of which are only used regionally. In addition to the annual anniversaries, a number of names for broken holidays have been created that are derived from the 25-year rhythm. As early as the 19th century, a continuous halving resulted in 12 12  years and 6 14  years and also 37 12  years, which can be understood as a halving of 75 years. Another broken wedding anniversary is the garlic wedding, which is celebrated after 33 13 years.

Wedding anniversaries in Germany

There are various regional variations in the names, which is why some anniversaries have different names. Some names are also given multiple times, for example the Iron Wedding can stand for 6, 41, 60, 65, 70 or 75 years of marriage. Helmut Walther from the Society for German Language notes in an overview article that when naming many anniversaries, “business interests v. a. of the flower and jewelry trade [...] cannot be overlooked. "

In April 1991 around 71,000 married couples in Germany had been married for 50 years and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Ten years later, around 190,000 couples had been married for more than 50 years. In 2010 there were around 20 million marriages registered. Of these, 10 million couples had been married for more than 25 years and 1 million for more than 50 years. 10,000 couples had been married for more than 65 years.

Customs and Traditions

The customs, gifts and decorations are strongly based on the names of the respective wedding day.

After a year of marriage, the paper wedding is celebrated. A well-known tradition is to eat the top floor of the wedding cake on the anniversary. Either the top part is frozen or a smaller version of the wedding cake is ordered for the wedding day. Another custom is to watch their wedding film. Many couples save this moment until the 1st anniversary.

For the wooden wedding after 5 years, it is common in rural regions for the couple to repeat the wedding dance in wooden shoes. In addition, decorative elements made of wood are used for the celebration or wood shavings are distributed indoors. If the couple is still without offspring, the 5th anniversary is called ox wedding. On this wedding day, condoms that have previously been pierced are usually given away to the couple. There are no known customs at the industrious wedding when the couple has already fathered several children.

On the day of the rose wedding after 10 years of marriage, a rose bush is usually planted in the couple's garden. It is also a tradition that the husband gives his partner ten red roses.

The parsley wedding after 12.5 years is traditionally organized by the groomsmen and friends of the couple. The food and drinks should be brought by the guests of the celebration.

At the porcelain wedding after 20 years, it is customary for porcelain dishes to be smashed together or for the entire porcelain table to be renewed. The color white and figurines made of porcelain are used for decoration purposes.

At the silver or gold wedding, wreaths with the respective number are often hung on the door or in the couple's garden. This custom is also known as wreaths. Traditionally, the wreaths are made by the neighbors.

The customs of the silver wedding in northern and southern Germany differ greatly. In northern Germany, the entrance door is decorated with silver-colored decorations, fir branches and the number 25. In addition, red cloths are hung up to drive away evil spirits and witches. In southern Germany, friends and acquaintances of the cheering couple throw silver cutlery out of the window.

A bouquet of flowers is often given away for the golden wedding, which is either completely sprayed in gold or has gold accessories. In addition, two fir trees are connected with a golden garland in front of the door. Each fir stands for one of the two spouses.

For the ruby wedding after 40 years or for the diamond wedding after 60 years, the respective stone is often worked into the couple's wedding rings. There are no other customs, but the color red is often used to mark the 40th anniversary. The diamond wedding is often hosted by the couple's family.

Records

The shortest marriage in Germany lasted only nine hours. The couple married in Munich in 2011 and divorced on the same day. They didn't celebrate a single marriage anniversary.

The longest known marriage to date is said to be Karam (born November 10, 1905 - September 30, 2016) and Kartari Chand (* November 1, 1912 - December 28, 2019) from Bradford (Great Britain) from December 11, 1925 (90 years of age) , 9 months).

In the Guinness Book of Records , the marriage of the Americans Herbert (born June 10, 1905, † February 27, 2011) and Zelmyra Fisher (born December 10, 1907, † February 20, 2013) is a record. They were married on May 13, 1924 in North Carolina, USA, and were married for 86 years and 290 days.
