Fatai Ayinla

Fatai Ayinla-Adekunle (born May 6, 1939 in Ibadan , Oyo ) is a former Nigerian boxer .

Career

Ayinla's first international medal was a silver medal at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in the light heavyweight division (-81 kg). In the same year he won the African Championships in Lagos . At the African Championships in Lusaka in 1968 , he finished second and qualified for the Olympic Games in the same year. Here he won his first fight against Enrique Villareal, Mexico (TKO 2nd), but then retired in the quarter-finals against the later silver medalist Ion Monea , Romania (3-2).

In 1970 Ayinla won the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh . At the African Championships in 1972 he started in the heavyweight division (+81 kg) and took second place. He qualified for the second time for the Olympic Games , but this time did not get beyond the preliminary round. He was defeated by the Canadian Carroll Morgan with 3-2 judge votes.

In 1973 Ayinla won the African Games in Lagos and in 1974 in Christchurch the silver medal of the Commonwealth Games . In the same year he reached the semi-finals of the 1st World Championships in Havana . Ayinla met the Cuban Teófilo Stevenson here , to whom he lost on points.
