Fate (also FATE ) is a computer game developed and distributed by WildTangent , which falls into the genre of action role-playing games or hack & slay games. It was first published in 2005 .

Gameplay

In Fate, the player chooses a character whose gender and appearance he can partially determine. In addition, you have to choose a dog or a cat as your pet, which will stand by your side as a companion and which can be transformed into monsters with fish. The pet can also be used to sell items without the player having to leave the dungeon. The character starts with his pet in a village called Grove, where there is an entrance to a dungeon in which a strong monster lurks on a dungeon level between 40 and 50, which serves as the main target. After this has been defeated, offspring of the character can be created. In addition, up to three randomly generated orders can be accepted for each dungeon level before entering it for the first time. These can also be canceled at any time, which is even told as a trick by the program.

The character has four abilities: Strength, Dexterity, Vitality (health) and Magic (magic). With higher Strength the character does more damage, while with higher Dexterity he gets improved accuracy and a higher chance of evasion. Vitality increases the hit points , while Magic increases the magic points and, under a certain number of points, also possible learnable spells. These skills can be improved by increasing the level of experience or by standing around learning shrines in the dungeon. You can distribute 5 skill points as you wish per level up. The learning shrine permanently increases a random ability by 0–3 points.

In contrast to role-playing games like Diablo , you cannot select a character class . Instead you get a lot of skills that are at level 0 at the beginning and which you can increase by awarding points. Skill points are obtained by increasing the character level or fame level. Fame can be increased by defeating strong opponents, completing tasks, and paying a specific non-player character . Experience points are obtained from defeated opponents and completed tasks.

As is typical of the genre, it is possible to use equipment to improve one's skills. These will be improved even if no skill point has yet been invested. The equipment is divided into normal, magical, rare and artifacts (unique items). In addition, socketed items can be enhanced with jewels. If you are not satisfied with such a socketed item, you can have the jewels removed from the item in the village. Either the item or the jewels are destroyed. A forge can be found in some dungeon levels to try to improve an item. The probability is higher that items with few magical properties will be improved. However, it is also possible that such an improvement causes disadvantages, for example by giving the item a property that subtracts skill points.

Skill points and skill points obtained when leveling up are distributed permanently, which means that you cannot remove them once you have distributed them.

The currently available version of the basic game is now also available in German. While the conversations and the speech output were translated, the creatures, objects and spells remained in English.

magic

The spells can be divided into the three classes “Attack”, “Defense” and “Charm” (support), each of which has a skill. You can have up to six spells in each of these classes at the same time, whereby the type of spells that can be learned depends on the magic. With higher Magic, more spells can be learned. While the weakest spells can be learned with the starting values, better spells require high values in Magic. The spells are strengthened by increasing the respective magic class. An example: The city portal spell requires 10 Magic to be learned and works up to two dungeon levels deep and two more for each skill point invested in Charm.

Technical

After the demo version of the game has been downloaded for free and installed, you can play up to dungeon level 3 or character level 6. You can unlock the rest of the game with a chargeable code. A one-time connection to the Internet is required for this. Due to the structure of the data storage, Windows 2000 or Windows XP is also required for activation. Fate can only be played as a demo version on other operating systems. Each time you reinstall the game, you have to reactivate it.

The game is now also available on Steam .

Fate is rendered entirely in 3D. The player can zoom in and out and turn the action 90 degrees to the left and right at the touch of a button. The dungeon theoretically contains more than 4 billion levels that are generated randomly. Orders are generated randomly for up to three levels in advance. If all tasks have been completed on a dungeon level, there is no city portal and 30 minutes have passed since the last entry, the level regenerates, the corridors remain, but monsters and the contents of treasure chests are redistributed.
