To the southeast, the park borders on the Bruce Peninsula National Park .
Contrary to its name, however, it is not a national park, but a National Marine Conservation Area . It is the first National Marine Conservation Area established in Canada. The two types of protected areas differ in their protection status and possible uses. The park is an IUCN Category VI ( Protected area with sustainable use of natural resources ; resource protection area with management ). Since 2009 parts of the park are Dark Sky Preserve ( light protection area , Bruce Peninsula Dark Sky Preserve ).
The protected area managed by Parks Canada also includes the currently 27 known historical shipwrecks , such as the sweepstakes and three lighthouses (Cove Island, Big Tub and Flowerpot). Furthermore, you will find a collection of islands with a variety of creatures living in the water on the partly rugged coasts. Since 2006, the park, together with the Bruce Peninsula National Park, has been cared for from a joint visitor center in Tobermory.
The park was temporarily on the Canadian tentative list .
