Fausto Sampaio
Fausto Sampaio (born April 4, 1893 in Alfeolas , Anadia , Aveiro , Portugal ; † April 4, 1956 in Lisbon , Portugal) was a Portuguese painter.
Through his long stays overseas he created a unique, picturesque universe of the people and cultures of Portuguese Asia and Portuguese Africa . He is also often called the "painter of the east".
Life
Fausto Sampaio became deaf at only twenty-two months . This was caused by heat stroke and remained so for life. Up to the age of fourteen he was trained at a school in Porto and then came to Lisbon for five years, where he received special training for deaf young people at Casa Pia and his talent for painting was also encouraged. Then he returned to Anadia and devoted himself to painting.
From 1926 until 1934 he was regularly in Paris , where he was trained at important academies and there also had first exhibitions in galleries. Important exhibitions followed in Lisbon later.
Between 1934 and 1947 he was constantly traveling and lived and painted in Macau , South Africa , São Tomé and Príncipe , Goa , Diu , Daman and Timor . There he created pictures that made him the official "painter of the empire" and that received support from the Estado Novo .
In his portraits - especially as a landscape and portrait painter - he paints a unique picture of the people, peoples and cultures of the overseas provinces of Portugal, especially in Asia and Africa. This creates portraits of individual people, but also of cities, streets and, above all, everyday life. Sampaio can therefore be regarded as the chronicler of these regions.
On his birthday, April 4, 1956, he died in Lisbon at the age of 63.
In Anadia a street is named after him and there is also a monument with a bust of the painter.
