The Fauvel AV.22 is a two-seat Brushless as a means Decker been deliberate Glider , which in the 1950s by Charles Fauvel was designed. The term "AV" stands for "Aile Volante" (literally "flying wing", meaning flying wing aircraft ).

technology

Two-seater AV.22 (1956)

The two-seater wooden construction with partial fabric covering consists of a teardrop-shaped short fuselage and a slightly pre-arrowed rectangular trapezoidal wing with the S- flap profile Fauvel F2 17%. The elevator is located on the inner wing. Unlike the Fauvel AV.36, the vertical stabilizer is positioned in the middle. The ailerons are located on the trapezoidal outer wing. In addition, the wing has airbrakes in the area between the elevator and ailerons. The plywood fuselage is relatively high in order to allow the teacher / passenger to sit in a slightly elevated position for a better view to the front. Fauvel had the plane u. A. Designed for a tender as a standard trainer aircraft for the French flying clubs. However, the Wassmer WA-30 "Bijave" won this competition. Nevertheless, the AV.22 has pleasant flight characteristics. Six were built, as far as known, two of them still fly.

AV.221 and AV.222

AV.221 with bipod landing gear

In view of the good flight characteristics, it made sense to develop the aircraft further as a motor glider . A new hull was constructed in which both occupants could be seated next to each other. It was powered by a Rectimo 4 AR 1200 with 40 HP. The first flight took place on April 8, 1965. The AV.221 remained a one-off.

With the AV.222 an attempt was made to simplify the construction for amateur construction. Like the SF 25 disc, the AV.222 has a central wheel and a steerable tail wheel, and support wheels were attached under the wing. The exact number of finished AV.222s is not known. Various engines were installed.

Others

Noin Choucas

In 1996 the Alpaero company brought out the ultra-light motor glider "Choucas" by the designer Claude Noin as a kit airplane. The design corresponds to that of a reduced AV.222. The two-seater machine has a length of 5.35 m and a wingspan of 14.35 m, which can optionally be increased to 15 m. The wing profile is the Fauvel F2 with 17% thickness and the engine a Rotax 503. In the meantime about 14 kits of the "Choucas" have been delivered, 12 of which are already in flight.
