Fay-Ann Lyons (fully Fay-Ann Corelle Lyons-Alvarez, born November 5, 1980 in Point Fortin ) is a Trinidian Soca musician. She is also known by the pseudonyms Lyon Empress , Mane the Matriarch and Silver Surfer .

Life

Lyons was born in Point Fortin as the daughter of Soca musician Austin " Superblue " Lyons and Soca musician Lynette "Lady Gypsy" Steele. She has been active as a singer and songwriter in the Soca scene since 2002. In addition to her solo career, Lyons was also a regular member of Soca bands. From 2002 to 2005 she worked as a singer for the band Invazion. On December 23, 2006 she married the Soca musician Ian " Bunji Garlin " Alvarez. Since 2008 she has been a member of her husband's Asylum Band. In 2009 their daughter Syri was born. In 2015 she performed at the Coachella Festival and the Glastonbury Festival . In 2017, quarrels within the Asylum Band caused media coverage when drummer Gregory “Animal” Pegus left the band after 14 years in an argument and accused Lyons of “disrespectful behavior” towards the band as well as unjust pay.

Awards

Fay-Ann Lyons is one of the most successful Soca artists of all time in terms of awards and is the most successful female Soca artist. In addition to numerous category wins in the International Soca Awards , she is a three-time winner of the Carnival Road March title and thus the most successful woman in this discipline. In 2009 she became the first woman to win the International Soca Monarch competition.
