Fayard [ fajɑʁ ], also Librairie Arthème Fayard , is aFrench publisher founded in 1857 by Jean-François Arthème Fayard andbased in Paris . He belongs to Hachette Livre .

As early as the 19th century , the publisher was targeting a wide audience and well-illustrated books. Humorous illustrated magazines such as Le Bon Vivant (1899 to 1911), La vie pour rire and Le petit Illustré amusant (1898 to 1911) appeared, followed by magazines for young people ( La Jeunesse Illustrée 1903, Les Belles Images 1904). At the beginning of the 20th century , cheap paperback series followed , among which the Fantômas series had the greatest success.

A historical series was added in the inter-war period , edited by Pierre Gaxotte . At that time, the publisher was predominantly right-wing politically.

Imprints Pauvert (taken over in 1999), Mazarine and Éditions Mille et Une Nuits belong to the Fayard publishing house . From 2009 Hachette Littérature belonged to the publisher.

From 1980 to 2009 Claude Durand was publishing director, then Olivier Nora (from Grasset) and from 2014 Sophie de Closets.
