Faymonville ( German  Außenborn ) is a Belgian village with around 1000 inhabitants, which has been part of the municipality of Weismes since the municipal merger in 1977 . The place is in the valley of the Warchenne , a tributary of the Warche . The area around the place is characterized by agricultural grassland.

Faymonville is about 1.5 kilometers southeast of Weismes. The French-speaking town is located directly on the German - French language border; the neighboring village of Schoppen , 2 kilometers south-east, is already German-speaking.

history

The German name of the place was Außenborn, this denotes the location on the other side of the ridge (Birt), which forms the watershed that separates the place, which formerly belonged to the Bütgenbach farm, from the main town.

The archives of the 17th century show that 1601 residents had to mow a meadow belonging to Lord von Bütgenbach on Ussenbirt . 1626 Faymonville was led in the tax roles. In 1701 M. von Reiffenberg, Herr von Bütgenbach, had a chapel built, as the place now had more than 35 fire places. The residents had to contribute to the costs. The old chapel gave way to the construction of a new church in 1911.

Between 1794 and 1814, Faymonville was under French rule. The Kulturkampf decreed by Bismarck in the course of Germanization in 1873 forbade the Walloon language in administration, schools and churches. A staunch fighter against these ordinances was the Faymonville-born priest, Abbé Joseph Bastin (1876–1939).

As a result of the Versailles Treaty , Faymonville came to Belgium in 1920. During the Battle of the Bulge , in the winter of 1944–1945, the place was almost completely destroyed.
