A plume is an ornament on military headgear.

The plume can consist of feathers from ostriches , herons , roosters, and other birds. The plume was still worn by entire troops in the 19th century, but was either abolished at the end of the 19th century or replaced by the hair bush . In most armies it was then only used as an award for generals .
