The neck is an upright plume that is used to decorate the headgear of uniforms . It was especially worn in the late 18th century and in the first half of the 19th century. Often its color provides information about the regimental and company affiliation of the carrier.

nature

The feathers were bleached from Federschmücker, sometimes curled, possibly dyed and then a rod of whalebone bound. Ostrich, heron, hawk, vulture, rooster or goose feathers were used depending on the fashion and the rank of the person wearing them.

use

In Adelung's grammatical-critical dictionary of the High German dialect it says that this "plume standing up for ornament" is also called "helmet or knight stutz", "which was worn by the knights to adorn their helmets." Krünitz writes in his lexicon from 1858: “Even now the feather dressers use this word to designate a short, twisted plume of feathers to adorn the hat for a military person. Prepare the springs for support when they are supposed to stand up, to the difference from the flat springs, z. B. the hat feathers. "
