Federico Chueca (born May 5, 1846 in Madrid , † July 20, 1908 there ) was a Spanish pianist and composer .

He began studying pianist at the Madrid Conservatory, but then switched to medicine. While in college, he participated in a student riot and was sentenced to prison. He began to compose in prison. With the waltz suite “Lamentos de un preso” composed there, he attracted the attention of the musician and composer Barbieri , who was very popular in Madrid at the time , and who composed and performed the work for orchestra. After his release from prison, Chueca found his way back to music and turned to Zarzuela , sometimes together with Barbieri and other composers . He achieved great success in this then rediscovered genre.

Chueca's music was very popular and entertaining, he was particularly good at implementing satirical material for the stage, his Zarzuela “La Gran Via ” had 800 performances in Madrid and then went around the world. In addition to several other successful works in this genre, for which he also wrote the lyrics in part, he only created a few dances; his name is inextricably linked to the great Zarzuela era in the second half of the 19th century. His "Saniete lirico" El bateo , which premiered in 1901 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, is also well known.
