The Federal Office of Police fedpol ( French Office fédéral de la police fedpol , Italian Ufficio federale di polizia fedpol ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation based in Bern . It reports to the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) .

history

The Swiss Confederation initially had no federal police. In 1903 a central police office responsible for coordination tasks was established. In 1917 the Federal Aliens Police were founded. In 1935, in response to the Jacob affair, the Federal Police was created under the direction of Federal Prosecutor Franz Stämpfli , which was primarily responsible for counter-espionage and the fight against terrorism. The reorganization of the federal police, separating preventive and judicial police, took place in the 1990s. The Federal Police was incorporated into the Federal Police Office in 1999. Since 2001, the judicial police tasks have been carried out exclusively by the Federal Office of Police.

tasks

fedpol is responsible for the coordination between the cantonal police forces as well as for requests for information from foreign police stations within the framework of cross-border cooperation . The Federal Office runs the automated police search system Ripol . Until the end of 2008, fedpol was also responsible for state security ( service for analysis and prevention ) before this function was transferred to the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) in the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport .

The Federal Office also takes on its own investigations in the field of organized crime , the money laundering or corruption under the supervision of the Attorney.

Swiss identity documents such as passports and identity cards are also responsible.

Fedpol is the point of contact for the Swiss Air Force for agreements with cantonal police forces in the event of aircraft hijacking, the risk of terrorism from the air and serious violations of air traffic regulations.

The Federal Office publishes the annual reports on internal security in Switzerland. The authority is based in Bern .
