The term gauntlet ( feud : "private war") is used in the German language in the idioms "throwing the gauntlet" and "picking up / lifting the gauntlet".

meaning

"Throwing the gauntlet on someone" means trying to challenge them or want to start an argument with them. One speaks of “picking up / picking up the gauntlet” when someone accepts a challenge.

origin

Contrary to popular belief, the term does not come from the Middle Ages . At that time the custom of throwing down and picking up a glove to announce and accept a feud is known in circles of knighthood , but a formal declaration of the feud was necessary for the legality of such a feud .

The expression, as a combination of the words feud and glove , did not emerge until the 18th century, when it was customary to hit one's opponent in the face with a glove made of cloth in order to challenge him to an honor duel .

Use in pop culture

  • In the episode "Duel at Sunrise" of the Simpsons (episode 5, season 11, episode 231), the main character Homer challenges other characters to duels several times with the blow of his gloves.
  • On the album "Gottes Werk und Creutzfelds Contribution" from the year 2000 by the German hip-hop group Creutzfeld & Jakob , there is a title called "Gauntlet".
