Field book frames - tools for surveyors

A field book frame is a tool for surveyors . The frame is usually A4 size and holds several sheets of drawing on a stable plate, which are clamped in by means of a folding mechanism. The frame is placed around the neck using an adjustable strap, creating a basis for drawing. Older models were made of wood with a sheet of plywood, later aluminum sheet. Modern field book frames are usually made of plastic and are also suitable for use under water. Models in A3 format are less common.

The name comes from the requirement to have to construct relatively cleanly “in the field”, ie in the great outdoors. Field books are considered to be documents and are in principle archived in the original, even if they are neatly redrawn later in the office.
