A clipboard is a thin board with a clip at the top and used to record notes.

Clipboards are always used when there is no suitable or comfortable writing surface, for example during lectures or on-site visits . More complex versions are referred to as field book frames in surveying .

Clipboards are usually a little larger than A4 paper . A stack of paper can be clamped into the clamp, the board serves as a solid writing surface. Often a pen is attached so that it cannot be lost (chain, thread) and there is a loop for it. In the past, clipboards were made of wood, today they are made of plastic or often made of cardboard that is welded into plastic, with the clamp being riveted on at the top. Sometimes there is also an additional bracket on the left side. Professional clipboards are made of aluminum and often have an additional paper compartment, a strap and lighting.

Pilots use knee boards that can be attached to the leg with a Velcro fastener.

Clipboards are often also attached inside control cabinets or similar locations to document maintenance, cleaning or repairs.

The Japanese Kenji Kawakami further developed the clipboard into a portable desk. Equipped with shelves, waste paper basket, office lights and all materials, it offers business people in a hurry the opportunity to work on the go and while walking. However, this invention was meant to be joking and belongs to the realm of the Chindogus .
