The Jakob Maul GmbH (proper spelling: FOOT) is a manufacturer of office supplies, with headquarters in Bad Koenig , the district cell in Odenwaldkreis in Hesse .

history

Jakob Maul GmbH was founded in 1912 by Jakob Maul (1866 / 67–1953). Jakob Maul, son of a wine grower from Rheinhessen, came from a similar Hamburg metalworking company when, at the age of 45, he bought the property of a former comb factory in Bad König Zell in the Odenwald in August 1912. A month later he founded the metal goods factory. The hydropower available on the property offered the advantage of own power generation , as there was no public power grid at the time. With three locksmiths and an unskilled worker, the tools for the mechanical production of office items were first made. To do this, Jakob Maul had to train every employee himself, because there were no toolmakers in this branch of industry, which was completely new for the Odenwald region .

At the beginning of 1913, the production of note hooks , quills , ink erasers ( extinguishers ), letter openers and bookends began.

The older part of today's manufacturing facilities was built in the late 1920s by the architect Georg Peter Klein from Zell on the site of the old mill. On the opposite slope, the associated factory owner's house was built as a three-storey stone building with a crooked hip roof and porch with a diagonally positioned corner tower . The house shows echoes of style elements from the Werkbund and Expressionism. Both the old company building and the factory owner's house are now a listed building.

During the two world wars, the company had to contend with personnel worries due to drafting and massive material procurement problems. The workforce had increased to 160 by 1936, and after the end of the Second World War, work was resumed with only around 50 people.

In 1953, engineer and son-in-law Fritz Scharmann, who had been with the company since 1923, took over overall responsibility for the company after the death of Jakob Maul. In 1970 the production of Ph. J. Maul in Hamburg was taken over, in 1974 Porti office equipment was bought in Hamburg. In 1979 the KG was converted into a GmbH . For the 75th anniversary in 1987, Maul produced 192 articles with around 100 employees.

In 1999 Maul introduced the world's first pure solar letter scale. For the first time, solar scales were available at prices comparable to battery-operated scales . At the beginning of 1999 the subsidiary Weiss GmbH was integrated. On July 1, 2001, the company Walter Hebel GmbH & Co. KG from Kirchen was acquired.

Werner Scharmann died in August 2004. His brothers Hellmut and Walter Scharmann had already withdrawn from the operative business. Werner Scharmann's son Stefan, who has been managing director since 1996, continued to run the company together with Winfried Brand (Managing Director Technology) and Hermann Stühn (Managing Director Lever). Stefan Scharmann has had sole responsibility as managing director since 2009 . The shareholders' meeting is made up of Stefan Scharmann and four other members of the Scharmann families.

In 2012 Maul celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Products

The company is the global market leader in electronic solar scales , which are sold under the “Maul” brand. The heart of the solar scale is the measuring sensor developed and patented by Maul . It measures the movement caused by the pressure of the weight. With a 2 kg scale, a weight of one gram corresponds to a sensor movement of 0.00035 mm. The development of a mixed-signal ASIC has reduced energy consumption by 320 times. Maul was the first company to succeed in developing letter scales with pure solar energy - a world first at the time. The first solar scale manufactured by Maul was the MAULtronic S in 1999.

In addition, the range is divided into the categories of setting up, organizing, informing, planning, presenting and weighing.
