Feldmann (dog)
Feldmann (* approx. 1979 ; † 1987 ) was a mixed breed male and the companion of the author Michael Holzach on his way through Germany in 1980. Holzach gave him the name Feldmann because allegedly all dogs in the Sauerland are called that. Michael Holzach was killed on April 21, 1983 while trying to save the dog from drowning.
origin
As a puppy, he spent a few months at the Itzehoe animal shelter . Not available there, he was taken to an unspecified animal shelter in the south of Hamburg. There the author Michael Holzach came across Germany for free on the first day of his hike in 1980 as part of the research for his book Germanyon him because he was specifically looking for a dog to accompany him and for which he wanted to take responsibility. When changing the shelter from Itzehoe to Hamburg, Feldmann was transported in the car and did not take it well. That is why the sign on his animal shelter had the handwritten addition: 'Don't like driving!' Since the hike was only planned on foot, this detail turned out to be decisive for Michael Holzach to choose him as his companion.
- “In the penultimate cage, almost at the end of the long corridor, there is a light brown promenade mixture on the bare concrete in the corner and shyly watches the raging of their fellow prisoners, with their tails drawn in and ears wide, their foreheads trembling all over. The green ID card attached to her kennel gives scant information about the timid prisoner: 'Race: Boxer mix .; Gender: rd .; Color: br .; Age: about 0.5 years; Name: unknown .; Home stay: since April 1st ' Handwritten addition: 'Don't like driving!' - that's the decisive factor for me. "(P. 6)
First accident
The joint hike, which was to extend over almost 2500 km in six months, almost came to an end near Hildesheim . On a busy road, Feldmann ran in front of a car and suffered a severe concussion and a laceration under his left ear, which was treated by a veterinarian.
Second accident
On April 21, 1983, Michael Holzach went for a walk on the banks of the Emscher with a television editor who wanted to make a film of “Deutschland versonst”. They wanted to look for motifs and visit the location in Dortmund-Dorstfeld, which he described in the book. Feldmann slipped on the concrete embankment and fell into the water, which has a strong current at this point. Since the dog could not free itself, Michael Holzach jumped after it to save it. His head hit a concrete pillar, passed out and drowned. The dog survived.
Four years after this disaster, Feldmann died of natural causes. Holzach's friend, Freda Heyden, buried him under a beech tree in her garden.
