Rock paintings in Västerbotten County
The rock paintings in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden were made between 4000 and 2000 BC. In the form of rock paintings and rock carvings by Stone Age hunters and gatherers .
The rock carvings in Västerbotten County are applied to almost vertical, slightly overhanging rock walls and boulders that protect the picture from weathering. They are mostly located near lakes and rivers, in some cases in forests, but also there near water. The pictures were mostly painted with red ocher . The most common motif is the moose . In some cases, humans and dogs are also shown. The rock paintings of Finnsforsberget I depict around 20 motifs of fish , a main source of food for Mesolithic societies, the only ones found so far in Sweden.
The province has six well-known rock art sites:
- Storberget, socks in Åsele
- Lögdån , below Lögdåkullen in Fredrika
- Korpberget in Lycksele stad
- Finnforsberget I and II
- Norsjömorberget , in Skellefteå socks
