The rock carvings at Ballochmyle near Mauchline ( Scottish Gaelic Machlainn ) in East Ayrshire in Scotland were only discovered in 1986 about 260 m northeast of the Ballochmyle Viaduct on the front of a sandstone cliff , when the vegetation and a backfill had been removed. There are three groups of cup-and-ring markings on the vertical rock face. There are other petroglyphs between the two main groups .
