Masonic Temple (Barrhead)
The Masonic Temple of the Scottish city of Barrhead is on Cochrane Street . In 1980 the building was added to the Scottish Monuments Lists in Category C.
history
The Barrhead Masonic Lodge was founded on February 2, 1824 as Lodge Crown & Union with registration number 378. After the lodge showed little activity from the 1830s, activity increased again towards the end of the century. In the meantime, the matriculation numbers have been reassigned and the box was assigned the number 307, which it still bears today. Construction of what is now Barrheads Masonic Temple was completed in 1910. The cost of construction was £ 1,446. Due to the steadily growing number of members in the second half of the 19th century, an expansion of the building was necessary. This was completed in 1994.
description
The building was planned by the architects Ninian McWhannell and John Rogerson , who are also responsible for the administration buildings at 124 Main Street and 128 Main Street in Barrhead. The red sandstone from which the temple is made comes from the Ballochmyle quarry. The building is two-story and has architectural features of the Scottish Baronial . It has a corner tower , a crowned entrance door and ends with a gable roof . An embedded badge shows the year of construction.
