A Fernhochschule or Fernfachhochschule is a university (or college ) that is similar to an open university a regular course with regular financial statements solely by way of distance education offers.

In Germany, the distance learning university in Hagen remained the only major provider of distance learning for a long time . Private and state-recognized universities that exclusively offer distance learning courses include, among others, the AKAD private universities (which was the first private German distance- learning university), the Private Distance University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt , the SRH Distance University , the PFH Private University of Göttingen , the European Distance University in Hamburg (Euro-FH), the HFH Hamburger Fern-Hochschule or Fernfachhochschulen that have a certain specialization, such as the Apollon University of Health Economics .

There are also some state universities of applied sciences that also offer distance learning courses. Some of these universities also regularly offer face-to-face events (e.g. lectures, exercises, revision courses) or organizational support for students at so-called study centers on site. Some universities have libraries or virtual libraries with access to university libraries ( interlibrary loan ).
