The Ferrymead Heritage Park in Christchurch , New Zealand , is in the style of the Edwardian era designed open-air museum . In addition to a small town modeled from this period, it includes various museums for historical traffic and means of transport.

The origins of the Ferrymead Heritage Park , initially named Ferrymead Historic Park , date back to the early 1960s as a group of people caring for and preserving the city's cultural heritage, particularly its industrial and public heritage Transport systems, were interested and tried to preserve history and to get support for your commitment. Members founded in the 1950s Canterbury Railway Society and founded on Feb. 8, 1960 Tramway Historical Society finally asked 1963 Heathcote County Council (the Council of the Municipality Heathcote ) that around the former station of Ferrymead Railway repurchase lying land. He did it in 1964 and asked the local Chamber of Commerce to make a recommendation for the development of the area. The organizations included the Museum of Science and Industry , the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society , the Tramway Historical Society , the Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association , the Historic Places Trust , the Canterbury Museum Trust Board , the Christchurch Civic Trust , the Aviation Historical Society , the Vintage Car Club, and the Canterbury Progress League . Work on the park began in 1964 and the rails for trains and trams were laid in the following year.

In April 1968, the management committee finally founded the Ferrymead Trust as a non-profit organization to further develop the park, and on March 11, 1967, the park's route went into operation with the first railroad. The restored trains first ran in regular operation in the park from 1972 and were not officially inaugurated until five years later. In 1978 it was connected to the New Zealand Railways public rail network .

The first two restored trams started running in the park on January 6, 1968. In the late 1980s, the then Christchurch City Council drew up a concept for transporting tourists in the center of the city. The idea of ​​having historic trams run through the city came up and an agreement was reached with the Tramway Historical Society , which should provide and maintain the vehicles. For this purpose, the Heritage Tramways Trust was founded, which rented five trams to the city, while the operation of the trams was taken over by the specially founded Christchurch Tramways Limited under the direction of the city.

On 30 June 1998 has been prepared by Ferrymead Trust the Ferrymead Park Ltd founded which took care of the business operations of the park. The park is still managed today by the Ferrymead Trust , under which 19 companies active in the park (as of 2014) have come together.
