history

Memorial in memory of the victims of the 1991 genocide

A first settlement under the name Achyna or Othyna is believed to have been in the 12th century. Voćin Castle is mentioned for the first time in 1317 in a deed of donation from Charles I Robert (King of Hungary). A St. Nicholas church is documented for the year 1334. In the Middle Ages , Voćin was an important church center with two monasteries , probably a Franciscan and a Poor Clare monastery with their churches ( All Saints and St. Clare ). In 1434 the town was owned by the Gorjanski family . Since 1508 the place belonged to the Hungarian noble family of Batthyány . The monastery church of All Saints, built at the end of the 15th century (1494) as a late Gothic hall church , was renovated in the first half of the 18th century and consecrated to the parish church and the Blessed Virgin Mary . During the Ottoman rule from 1543 to 1687, the Franciscans were able to maintain pastoral care on site. From 1775 Voćin was owned by Count Erdödy , then Count Janković , until it was acquired by a timber contractor, Baron Edmund Gutmann, at the end of the 19th century. The castle, located in a park in the center of the village, was destroyed by fire in 1918. An economic boom set in during the 19th century. The Zvečevo family ran a glass factory . A railway line was built between Voćin and Čačinci . A sanatorium for lung diseases was established in Voćin. In the second half of the 19th century the church developed into a place of pilgrimage with pilgrims on foot from Posavina , Požega , West Slavonia , Podravina and other places. In 1944, the church was burned down during World War II . Reconstruction only began in 1964. The church was covered again in 1973 and rededicated in 1984, mainly thanks to the support of Croatians who lived in Burgenland , Austria . During the Croatian War , the area around Voćin was occupied in October 1991 by Serbian paramilitary units, the so-called " White Eagle (Beli orlovi) ". Shortly before it was retaken by the Croatian army, these paramilitary forces blew up the church on December 13, 1991 and completely destroyed it. In these days 43 residents of the place and the surrounding villages were murdered. After the establishment of the Diocese of Požega in 1997, the initiative was taken to reconstruct the church. Construction began in 2002 with the laying of the foundation stone. Pope John Paul II specially blessed this cornerstone in 1998. The church was consecrated again on August 14, 2011.

On the outside, the main events from the history of the parish and pilgrimage sites are depicted in reliefs made of bronze. On the inside, four mysteries of the rosary are depicted in reliefs made of copper . The central wooden cross , the stone altar , the ambo and the bronze candlesticks were made by the sculptor Šime Vulas, a gift from the town of Požega. The wall paintings are by Josip Biffel. The mosaics on the walls of three chapels are based on sketches by Croatian artists Ivo Dulčić and Ljubo Ivančić. The tabernacle door is the work of the sculptor Josip Poljan. The same artist also made the monument "In the Embrace of the Mother", which the Diocese of Požega erected in 2010 on the right near the entrance to the church. It commemorates the victims of the 1991 genocide .
