Orahovica is a town in Slavonia in Croatia with around 5800 inhabitants (statistical data from 2011: 5,304 inhabitants).

It is located on the slopes of the Papuk Mountains and on the main road (M3) Varaždin - Koprivnica - Našice - Osijek . Orahovica is a town in the Virovitica-Podravina County . In 1997 Orahovica got city status.

The town of Orahovica is located 20 km northwest of Našice at an altitude of 185 meters above sea level . To the north it extends into the plains. To the southeast it borders on the slopes of the Papuk and Krndija mountains and therefore on the Papuk Nature Park . The area of ​​Orahovica is 123.9 km².

history

Orahovica was first mentioned in writing in 1228 in a document from the Hungarian King Andrew II (Hungary) . In addition, Orahovica is already referred to both as a city ( oppidum ) and as a territory in medieval, written sources . The city came into royal possession in the 14th century.

In 1420 the noble Gorjanski family inherited the city of Orahovica. In 1522 the city came under the rule of Ladislav More de Cula , who was the last ruler of Orahovica before the Ottomans took the city in 1543. The Ottoman rule in Orahovica lasted 144 years until 1687. After that, some important noble families ruled Orahovica, such as B. the Counts Pejačević .
