Papuk Mountains in spring 2002

Papuk is a low mountain range in Slavonia in eastern Croatia . The highest point in the low mountain range is 953 meters high. Part of the mountain range has been declared a protected area, the Papuk Nature Park .

It is a famous hunting area with extensive forests and rolling hills in the middle of the Slavonian lowlands.

The closest larger towns are Daruvar , Požega , Virovitica , Orahovica , Slatina and Kutjevo .

During the Croatian war there were violent clashes between the newly founded Croatian army and the Yugoslav People's Army . In this area there were numerous remote villages with a permanent Serb population, which had been settled by Austria-Hungarians as defensive farmers in this area of the former military border as protection against the Ottoman Empire. When planning excursions, it is advisable to exercise particular caution and not to go into the woods without local people, as the area around the former border of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Serbian Krajina is still one of the most heavily mined areas in Croatia.
