Festival March (1893)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The festival march is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 452). The work was performed for the first time on June 4, 1893 in Vienna's Prater .

Remarks

The name of the march was given twice in Johann Strauss' catalog of works (see also Opus 49 ).

The march was composed on the occasion of the wedding between the then prince and later King of Bulgaria Ferdinand I (1861–1948) and Princess Marie Louise of Bourbon-Parma (1870–1899). Ferdinand, who came from the Saxe-Coburg-Koháry dynasty , was a personal friend of Johann Strauss and also helped him to arrange his wedding to Adele Deutsch-Strauss. On the occasion of Ferdinand's wedding, Strauss dedicated the festival march , op. 452, to him and his bride the waltz wedding dance (op. 453). The first performance of the march was played by military bands in the Vienna Prater. Kapellmeister J. N. Kral (1839-1896) had made an arrangement for brass music for it. The first performance with the Strauss Chapel took place on November 12, 1893 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein under the direction of the composer.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 42 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
