Objective of the festival

The festival specializes in classical music in honor of Théodore Gouvy (1819–1898), a Franco-German composer of the Romantic period . The aim of the festival is to re-perform works by Gouvy that have been wrongly forgotten. For this project there is a close collaboration between the Institut Theodore Gouvy, the male choir of Hombourg-Haut and the Orchester national de Lorraine .

The 2019 festival

In 2019 the motto of the festival is “200. Birthday of Théodore Gouvy ”even after this bicentenary was included in the list of“ Commémorations nationales ”2019 of the French Ministry of Culture. Among the six bicentenary concerts, July 4th is the highlight of the festival, one day after the composer's 200th birthday. It took place with the inauguration of a monument in honor of the Franco-German composer. The concert program consisted of only one work with "Aslega", oratorio based on a Scandinavian legend, the first version of which was composed from a French text in 1876 and was performed in Paris. But in the last years of his life, Gouvy had composed this oratorio from scratch with a German libretto . This second version was never performed.

Because it represents undeniable beauty and dramatic strength, the conductor Jacques Mercier wanted to resurrect this work by Gouvy.
