Fortress Brigade Corfu (Wehrmacht)

The Fortress Brigade Corfu was a German infantry brigade during World War II .

The brigade was set up on June 13, 1944 on Corfu in Greece from the staff of the Fortress Infantry Regiment 1017 , which formed the island commander of Corfu (from May 1944). The submission took place under the XXII. Mountain Army Corps .

On July 4, 1944, the unit was renamed Fortress Brigade 1017 . After the evacuation of Corfu in autumn 1944, the unit was disbanded and the remaining troops were deployed in Albania and Croatia .

The commanding officer was Colonel Emil Jäger , a former SA brigade leader. He tried to prevent the deportation of Jews from Corfu, even against the Jewish advisor Anton Burger who was called in .

Well-known person of the brigade was the communist resistance fighter and later writer Hasso Grabner , who was employed as a radio operator .
