Peshtigo firestorm

The Peshtigo firestorm occurred on October 8, 1871, over large areas in northeastern Wisconsin . The largest parish of 12 that were affected was Peshtigo . About 490,000 hectares (4,900 km²) burned down. Some people survived by fling into the Peshtigo River . Others who had fled into wells suffocated. The fire consisted of two fires on either side of Green Bay . About 1,500 people were killed. The Peshtigo Fire Museum preserves memorabilia from the disaster.

On the same day the Great Chicago Fire began , and there were also great fires in Holland , Manistee, and Port Huron .
