Peshtigo is a city in Marinette County , Wisconsin , United States . At the 2000 census, the Town of Peshtigo had 3819 inhabitants. The City of Peshtigo, which lies within the town, had 3502 inhabitants in 2010. The place became known as the site of the Peshtigo Fire in 1871.
The place has a total area of 8.3 km².
Peshtigo firestorm
On October 8, 1871 (the same day that the Great Fire of Chicago struck), a forest fire fanned by high winds devoured the town along with a dozen surrounding villages. The fire killed a total of between 1200 and 2500 people and charred approximately 1.5 million acres (6,000 km²). The fire, known as the " Peshtigo Fire ", is the forest fire with the most fatalities in American history and possibly even the most casualty recorded forest fire worldwide, before the Kurscha-2 fire in the Soviet Union, which claimed around 1200 lives . Unidentifiable remains of hundreds of residents were buried in a mass grave in the Peshtigo Fire Cemetery.
Demographic data
At the 2000 census, the City of Peshtigo had 3,357 residents, distributed among 1,315 households and 879 families. The population density was thus 425 inhabitants / km². 98% of the population were white, 0.12% African American. Children under the age of 18 lived in 32.9% of households. The median income was $ 34,898, with 8.2% of the population living below the poverty line . The Town of Peshtigo had 3819 inhabitants in 2000.
