Crivitz was founded in September 1883 by the German-born businessman Frederick John Bartels, who named the place after his native Crivitz in Mecklenburg .

After a typhus epidemic in 1894, the local sawmill would be closed. Hieronymus Zech (1849-1932), an entrepreneur from nearby Chilton , then promoted the settlement of Polish immigrants who moved here from Milwaukee and Chicago and still make up the core of the local population today.
