Fire station downtown (Hamburg)
The inner city fire station is a listed building of the Hamburg fire brigade on Herrengrabenfleet in the Neustadt district .
Description and history
The fire station was built from 1906 to 1909 according to plans by Albert Erbe . Since there were numerous buildings built in the 18th century in this district around 1910, Erbe chose motifs from the existing Hamburg baroque architecture . Before the building was erected, the fire fighting train had used several temporary structures at different locations as guards for 37 years. The construction costs for the fire station amounted to 487,950 marks plus equipment for a further 59,980 marks. It was opened on February 17, 1909. When it opened, the building was considered to be one of the most modern guards in Germany with numerous innovations, including electric vehicles, a gym and classroom, a teaching room and a fire department museum.
The building was only slightly damaged during the Second World War . As part of the following repair work, the attic was expanded and rebuilt. From 1986 to 1987 facades and interior fittings were renovated; the costs for this amounted to 3.7 million marks.
operation area

Building details
The brick facades of the building are loosened up by sandstone elements and numerous decorative shapes. The building was planned at the time of horse-drawn fire engines. Although a horse-drawn fire engine never entered the station after completion, the original plans can still be seen today. On the rear walls of the coach house there are still embedded, stable metal rings to which the horses should be tied, as well as several small hatches in the ceiling to the upper floor, which should serve to convey hay or straw into the hall.
