Fire Department in Latvia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fire brigades in Latvia are state fire-fighting and rescue services (Latvian: Valsts ugunsdzēsības un glābšanas dienesta, short: VUGD) subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior.

The fire brigades can be reached around the clock on 01 or 112. The Latvian fire service differs from fire services in German-speaking countries in terms of its personnel structure. All fire brigades are professional fire brigades with full-time firefighters. Voluntary fire fighters are only alerted in the event of major incidents or disasters. The training of professional firefighters takes place here at the National Fire Academy in Riga (Fire and civil protection college). Another difference to the German fire brigade system is the local availability: while in Germany even small communities have their own fire brigade, in Latvia the fire brigades are only in the capital Riga (8thFire stations ) as well as stationed in the 25 larger district towns. The fire department takes in Latvia next to the fire fighting and technical assistance , in particular in the field of passenger and animal rescue . In contrast to the American fire service system , the rescue service is not handled by the fire service. The highest authority for fire services is the Latvian Ministry of the Interior .
