Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FLAG ( F ibre-optic L ink A round the G lobe) is a 28,000 km long submarine cable that connects England with Japan and many countries in between.

The route between Hong Kong and Pusan was interrupted by an earthquake in 2006 .

In 2008 several parts of the line were interrupted by ship anchors. The ships had illegally entered a sea area with the route and had to anchor due to storms.

On December 20, 2008, FLAG was severed again in the Mediterranean . Also SEA-ME-WE 3 and 4 were affected.

In 2010 there were again interruptions due to earthquakes. A shock of magnitude 6.4 damaged various backbones and connections that connect Taiwan to the flag network. Longer-term failures were avoided by rerouting the data traffic.

The laying of the submarine cable with its technical, economic and historical aspects was explored by the writer Neal Stephenson on behalf of Wired on a world tour in 1995/96. His essay was published in December 1996 under the title Mother Earth - Mother Board .
