The spruce tower is an observation tower in Dresden-Plauen . The 30 meter high, crenellated round tower on a cubic base was originally built in 1896 as a Bismarck tower. It is the oldest Bismarck tower in Saxony and is located in the Fichtepark near the Kotteweg tram stop.

From the spruce tower you have a beautiful view of Dresden; with good visibility you can see as far as Saxon Switzerland . The viewing platform is 27 meters high and can be reached via a granite spiral staircase with 153 steps. The tower is usually open from Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but closed for maintenance work in January and February.

history

A competition was announced for the construction of the tower. However, the design of the winner, master builder Blauert, could not be implemented because the expected construction costs were too high. After a renewed invitation to tender and evaluation, it was decided to go for the cheaper design by the builders Ferdinand, William and Albert Fichtner.

The foundation stone was laid on April 1, 1896 in what was then Westendpark. Five months later, on September 2, 1896 ( Sedan Day), the tower was inaugurated. The construction costs amounted to 25,000 marks . The building material is sandstone and syenodiorite from Dresden-Plauen.

In 1937, on the occasion of the 175th birthday of the Saxon philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte , the surrounding Westendpark was renamed Johann-Gottlieb-Fichte-Park , but always simply referred to as Fichtepark . During the Second World War , the tower was used as an observation post with a flak position . In 1954 it was renamed Fichturm and in 1962 received a plaque and a medallion of the philosopher on the occasion of Johann Gottlieb Fichte's 200th birthday. A renovation took place between 1992 and 1998. In the 1990s, the Fichtepark was designed according to Carl Hampel's designs. In spring 2008 the spruce tower was renovated again.

  3. Dresden City Lexicon . Verlag der Kunst, Basel 1994, p. 132. The name was only mentioned in 1962, for example in: Rainer Schulze: Auf der Höhe Klemperers Grab . In: Sächsische Zeitung , November 6, 2004; but is wrong: in 1962 only the boards were put up.
