Fiji (swear word)

Fiji is a word that actually refers to the inhabitants of the Fiji Islands or the Fiji language , but was and is used as a swear word or derogatory term for Asian and Asian-looking people, especially the Vietnamese . In the Duden dictionary the word is recorded as meaning “person who comes from Indochina , especially from Vietnam ”. In addition, it should be noted that the designation is considered highly discriminatory in public usage and is therefore avoided.

The name came up in the GDR - despite the ban on discrimination - for Vietnamese and Asian and Asian-looking skilled workers. It is also used with discriminatory intent by right-wing extremists .

Markets and shopping opportunities that are run by Asians are also called "Fiji markets" in the colloquial language, especially in the border area between Germany and the Czech Republic.
