Field replaceable unit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Field Replaceable Unit ( FRU ) is an assembly that can be replaced at the place of use "in the field", ie without taking the device to a workshop or to the manufacturer. One example is the components that make up a PC ( graphics card , hard drive , etc.). If the module is hot-swappable , it can be replaced during operation.

As FRU u. a. at IBM also denotes the part number of the replaceable components (e.g. from a notebook ) and older hard drives. The newer hard drives are labeled Partnumber (P / N).

In the case of modules with IPMI support, a standardized data record is stored that contains information about the module and can be read out by the baseboard management controller . General information such as manufacturer and type designation is stored in this data record, as well as more specific information, for example about the sensors or the power requirement. In ATCA / MicroTCA systems, MCH, AMCs, Cooling Unit and Power Modules are grouped under the name FRU.
