Filerimos ( Greek Φιλέρημος ( f. Sg. ), Also Phileremos or Philermos ) is the name of a 267 meter high hill on the Greek island of Rhodes , about 8 km southwest of the capital Rhodes. On its plateau was the acropolis of the ancient city of Ialysus . With the numerous ruins from different eras, it is now a sight and a popular tourist destination.

Surname

The mountain takes its name from a monk coming from Jerusalem who had an icon of the Virgin Mary, allegedly painted by Luke the Evangelist , with him and who settled here as a hermit ( philerēmos from ancient Greek φίλος philos , German `` friend '' and ἐρῆμος erēmos , German 'lonely' , for example 'friend of loneliness'). The hill was previously called Achaia . This monk built a chapel in the 13th century, which was later expanded into a monastery and church. The bell tower can still be seen today.

view

From Filerimos you have a good view of the highest mountain on the island, the Attavyros . During the German occupation in World War II , military facilities were also built here. Some positions on Mount Filerimos still bear witness to this. The island's firefighters also take advantage of the view from this point, who operate an ideal observation station for the early detection of fires here in the summer months.
