The Filharmonisch Orkest van de BRT was a symphony orchestra based in Brussels , which existed from 1978 to 1998 and was supported by the Dutch-speaking public broadcaster BRT .

history

In the course of the reorganization of Belgian broadcasting in 1960, the "Institut National de Radiodiffusion / Nationaal Instituut voor de Radio-Omroep" was dissolved and the " Grand Orchester Symphonique de l'INR / Groot Symfonie-Orkest van het NIR ", founded in 1935 The newly founded “Institut des services communs / Instituut voor Gemeenschappelijke Diensten” has been subordinated. In 1978, however, this construct broke up and the two successor societies of the INR / NIR were forced to set up their own orchestras.

The BRT formed a new orchestra with 89 members from the Dutch-speaking members of the former community orchestra and the members of the recently disbanded "Omroeporkest", which primarily supplied the radio program BRT 3, but also the radio program BRT 1 and the television program. Fernand Terby, who had already been director of the "Omroeporkest", was appointed chief conductor.

In 1988 André Laporte, the station's previous music director, was appointed artistic director. The Iranian conductor Alexander Rahbari took over the musical direction of the orchestra. Under Rahbari's direction, the orchestra was increasingly engaged for tours abroad, and contracts were signed with the Naxos and Discovery labels.

In 1991 the BRT was renamed BRTN, accordingly the orchestra was subsequently called the “Filharmonisch Orkest van de BRTN”. For the 1994/1995 season, the orchestra had to relocate its work center to the Magdalena Festzaal in Brussels, as the previous domicile - the broadcasting center on Place Flagey / Flageyplein in Ixelles / Elsene - was closed for extensive renovation. In 1996, both Laporte and Rahbari left the orchestra after the station's management had made it increasingly clear that the orchestra could no longer be kept organizationally linked to radio. Frank Deleu was hired as the new director, who in turn engaged the British conductor Frank Shipway as the orchestra's musical director. On December 9, 1997, the BRTN was transferred to a new legal structure and was given the new name VRT . On March 2nd, a non-profit association was finally founded with the name “Vlaams Omroeporkest en Kamerkoor”. This foundation meant the end of the Belgian radio orchestra after the Orchester symphonique de la RTBF had been dissolved in 1991. Unlike in the French-speaking part of the country, the ensembles have been able to maintain their position as “Vlaams Radio Orkest” (since 2012 “ Brussels Philharmonic ”) or as “Vlaams Radiokoor” through independent sponsorship to this day.
