Catholic branch church St. James the Elder in Gois

The Catholic branch church of St. James the Elder in Gois is located on a prominent elevation in the middle of the Walserfeld , which - as remains of the building on the hilltop show - was used for strategic purposes (watchtower, castle).

history

The name Gois is derived from the Latin Collis ('hill'), a reference to the Romanesque settlement of the area. The St. James shrine was probably the own church of the knight family of the Lords of Gois, which can be traced back to between the 12th and 14th centuries. The church is mentioned for the first time in 1242, but is likely to be of much older origin. The names of the drinkers and administrators of the church property have been known since 1487. Because of various fiefdoms belonging to the church and a pilgrimage to Großgmain , during which the pilgrims also stopped in Gois, the Gois church was the richest of the Siezenheim branch churches. The church in Gois was a branch church of Siezenheim , which was assigned to the parish of Wals in 1860 when the parish parish was reorganized .

In the church, mass is celebrated on St. Stephen's Day, Leonhard's Day, on the Sunday after Peter and Paul, on St. Jakob's Patronal Feast Day (July 25) and at the weather fairs organized in summer. The Goiser Prangtag was celebrated for the first time in 1886 .

In modern times, the church has again become a destination for pilgrimages due to the renaissance of the Way of St. James .

Building history

West portal

The nave of the church consists of Romanesque walls. The walls were plastered back then up to the final flat ceiling. In the late Gothic period, a choir was added and the nave was provided with vaults. An indulgence granted in 1465 could be related to this construction. The west tower with triangular gables and pointed spire dates from around 1500. Originally the tower was vacant, presumably because the nave was to be enlarged; In the 16th century the tower was connected to the existing nave by means of an intermediate yoke.

The church is structured by baroque windows. The round-arched west portal is striking. Above the south portal there is a fresco from the 2nd half of the 16th century, which shows the agony of Jesus on the Mount of Olives. A wall fountain donates water for pilgrims and a bench on the wall invites you to take a break. The interior is divided by a groin vault and two further bays. Late medieval wall paintings were uncovered during the renovation in 1974/74. The neo-Gothic high altar was created in 1903 by Josef Gold . In the shrine the Mother of God is depicted with the baby Jesus (copy of the Gothic work stolen in 1968), on the right she is flanked by the church patron James and on the left by his brother Johannes . The ambo was made in 1992 from light limestone by Friedrich Koller. The neo-Gothic pulpit shows the four evangelist symbols .

The bell dates from 1544 and was cast by Hans Zöchengruber. The inscription on the bell reads: Jesus Nazarenus a Kunig of the jutes spare you over us.
