Josef Gold (painter)
Josef Gold (born February 2, 1840 in Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse , † May 15, 1922 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian painter and restorer during the late Biedermeier period and historicism . He is the grandfather of the painter Rudolf Szyszkowitz .
Life
Josef Gold studied with Moritz von Schwind in Munich from 1861–62 , then worked first in Sankt Johann im Pongau and from 1870 in the city of Salzburg. He created almost exclusively religious paintings. Together with Sebastian Stief and Josef Rattensperger, Josef Gold was an important representative of the art of the Nazarenes in Salzburg. The Nazarenes wanted to represent simplicity and genuine sentimentality, but their works often lost their originality due to frequent repetitions and stereotypes as well as sweetness perceived as kitschy. Josef Gold retained the naturalistic formal language of the Nazarenes even after Anton Faistauer, for example, used much more impressive and contemporary means in painting with the design of the Morzger church.
