History and architecture

history

A first church ad anua Ecclesia cum territario was mentioned in a property register of Bishop Arno from the years 788 to 799. Presumably his predecessor Virgil had a small church built out of stone or wood on a hill over the banks of the Salzach . She was the patron saint of St. Subordinate to Oswald . The Abbey of St. Peter and the Archdiocese of Salzburg separated in 987, and the churches in Gröding and Anif were transferred to the abbey. For several centuries they were incorporated into the abbey and were looked after by a cleric who was common to them. Anif was mentioned in 1191 as matrix ecclesia (mother parish). The community was elevated to a parish in 1883 and land was given by Count Arco-Stepperg. The parishes of Anif and Niederalm are looked after by a common clergyman.

Building description

The choir closes polygonally and probably dates from the late Gothic period . Its walls are adorned with frescoes painted in 1900 by Josef Gold in the Nazarene style. The picture on the left shows Saint Oswald's first royal hat, Oswald puts up a cross as a sign of the victory of faith. The landscape with the mountains in the background is related to the Salzburger Land. The picture on the right shows Oswald as a benefactor of the poor. The caption reads: This hand, which shares everything with the poor, will not rot . With the three men gesticulating at a table in the background, Gold portrayed Count Moy, Count Arco and the pastor Georg Reiter. According to an inscription on the left edge of the picture, both pictures were made by Countess Pauline Arco-Stepperg and Count Ernst and Countess Sophie Moy, nee. Stepperg donated. The arch field above the tower door was painted gold with pictures of the Salzburg bishops and Saints Rupert and Virgil. Between 1887 and 1896, Gold painted the ceiling frescoes over the choir arch, a monumental crucifixion scene that fills the entire area between the barrel vault and the arch. The center of the picture is shaped by the crucified dead Christ amid the two thieves . Maria Magdalena kneels in front of the cross, to the left of it stands Maria with a face marked by pain; John spreads his arms. The background shows Jerusalem, from which Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea approach the scene. The two saints next to Maria are probably Maria Salome and Maria Cleophas , both of whom belong to the Holy Tribe . The representation is enriched by the scribes and representatives of the high priests and two servants who carry away the instruments of the crucifixion. Soldiers roll the dice for the robe of Christ. The barrel vault is adorned with four ceiling medallions in the west and east. The last supper , the appearance of Christ among the apostles , the temptation of Christ in the wilderness and Jesus' baptism in the Jordan are shown. The scenes from the life of Mary show the engagement to Joseph , the proclamation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary and the Visitation of the Virgin . The middle fresco shows the coronation of the Virgin Mary. The frescoes of the Virgin Mary were executed using the grisaille technique. The shape and size of the nave comes from a renovation in 1840 that was necessary due to structural damage. The plaster was removed from the outer walls in 1969 during a modernization measure. In the early 1970s, the place of baptism was reorganized. The side altar with the image of Isidore was moved to the side wall of the main nave and replaced by the new baptismal font made by Jakob Adlhart and supplemented by a statue of Christ. The other side altar was also removed and replaced by a monumental sculpture by Adlhart. The frescoes in the presbytery were painted over and the old way of the cross dismantled. The stained glass windows in the choir with the depictions of Mary and the Heart of Jesus were removed and replaced with neutral glazing. A niche was broken into for sacrificial candles. The original prayer stalls with neo-Gothic ornamentation were replaced by no-frills stalls. The pulpit was demolished and not renewed. The arched windows were converted into rectangular ones. There were neo-Romanesque blind arcades under the eaves; they were torn down. The organ, eaten away by the woodworm, was dismantled, as was the gallery. As part of a renovation from 1996 to 1999, the entire interior was renovated and the sacristy refurbished. A storage place for the holy oils was set up in a niche near the baptismal font . The organ gallery was renewed during this time.

tower

The tower - classified as late Romanesque some time ago due to its massive construction, the walls made of conglomerate blocks and its triforias - according to archival research , dates back to the late Gothic period. The construction of the basement floor goes back to the Magister Johannes Murator , who belongs to St. Peter Abbey in Salzburg and who made a good foundation pillar for the tower in Anif in 1442 . Item Magister Johannes murator noster faciet The tower stands on a square floor plan with a side length of 6.80 meters. It was renovated from 1996 to 1999 during the renovation.

organ

The organ was built in 1983 by Johann Pirchner from Steinach in a purely mechanical design, according to the principles of classic organ building. Twenty-one voices are distributed among the main plant, the substation and the pedal. The veil boards of the prospectus in its traditional, classical form, were designed by the restorer Josef Ghezzi, he referred to the model of the Maurach organ from 1870. The organ prospectus was built by the sculptor Josef Plattner from Axams .

Other equipment

  • The high altar was built in 1840. The dominant altarpiece from 1866 shows Oswald with the attributes of a cross and a raven, including a view of Anif. It was painted by Sebastian Stief . The tabernacle doors are decorated with the Annunciation to Mary. The altar is equipped with various figures, the most high quality is that of Christophorus , which is modeled on the carving style of Hans Waldburger , it comes from the first half of the 17th century. During Lent, the altar is covered with a cloth made under the direction of Veronika Erhard . In the middle part, stylized hands point from top to bottom. A silhouette of Christ with a blessing and a greeting of peace completes the cloth.
  • The folk altar was made in 1969 by the sculptor Jakob Adlhart from Hallein. The same year the artist also built the celebration altar , which is decorated with reliefs of the evangelists.
  • The oil paintings depicting Notburga von Rattenberg and Isidor von Madrid were made by the Salzburg Nazarene painter Josef Rattensperger in 1843; they were originally pictures of side altars.
  • A bronze crucifix hangs over the pent roof .
  • Various gravestones can be seen on the outer walls, such as a coat of arms gravestone for Paul Waßner von Waßenau, who died in 1788, he was a caretaker and counselor in Anif. The tombstones for the bailiff Hans Überacker, deceased in 1505 and Maria Carolina Augusta, Countess von Überacker, deceased in 1750, were originally set into the floor of the church. The stone for Pastor Jörg Schrader, who died in 1515, was made from red marble.
  • The lid of an ash urn box from the third century was discovered in the cemetery wall . It is displayed outside on a renewed platform.
  • The monstrance was created in 1756 by Egidius Hablitschek from Tittmoning . The base is circular and decorated with rocailles , the vase-shaped node also has rocailles. The gold-plated rocailles around the lunula case are set with colored stones. The housing is surrounded by a halo. God the Father is enthroned in the upper part , he sits under a canopy. To the right of it Virgil is shown with a double-towered tower and to the left Oswald as king. The halo is crowned by a cross.
  • Nicolaus Mudet died in 1656, he was a hermit of the former Hellbrunn hermitage. His grave slab is on the south wall of the choir.
  • In 1972 Jakob Adlhart made a Way of the Cross in his post-Expressionist style. The carved reliefs are not taken .
  • Jakob Adlhart built a new nativity scene in 1969, which is set up every year around Christmas time. The former crib, shown in the inventory of the church with several photos, is stored in the sacristy. 58 figures have been preserved from the old nativity scene, including an ox and a donkey, an elephant and numerous sheep. The focus was on two temple architectures in and around which the figures were placed. The human figures are clothed in brocade fabrics, velvet and silk and other materials such as lace, gold and silver braids. The heads are either modeled from wax or carved in wood and some have glass eyes and natural hair. The basic structures are formed from jointed dolls. Such cribs were typical for parish churches in the 17th and 18th centuries.
