A film flight is a flight in which a camera is usually installed on a helicopter, but also on fixed-wing aircraft or drones, and aerial photographs are taken for films, documentaries or live reports. The camera operator sits in the helicopter or airplane and can move the camera 360 ° in the horizontal and approx. 180 ° in the vertical plane using a screen and joystick. With a drone, this is done via a remote control from the ground. In the case of film productions, the director also sits in the aircraft or next to the drone control and can follow the camera operator's view and give instructions via an additional screen.

The helicopter of the type Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter) AS350 is used most frequently , as this is one of the most common, most powerful light multi-purpose helicopters. The camera holder, also known as a “mount”, is a custom-made product that is suitable for this type and requires a separate FAA or EASA approval. The installation of the camera mount must also be carried out by a specialist company and then approved by an inspector. Since the approval of a mount and its attachment to the helicopter with all the necessary calculations requires great financial efforts, the companies have limited themselves to a few helicopter types, such as the AS350 .

Fixed wing aircraft

Film flights with fixed-wing aircraft are rarely carried out in the professional field because they are not able to fly tight circles or hover in place.

Drones

Drones are also often used for professional film flights, as they are much more cost-effective than helicopters and can also be used for extremely deep flights. Mostly professional sequences of film flights consist of a mixture of helicopter shots and drone shots.

Camera systems used

Gyroscopic systems

For the high-resolution cameras, 6-axis, gyro-stabilized systems are used. These so-called gyroscopes produce a clear image that is not disturbed by vibrations or unclean camera work. There are already camera systems that can create recordings with a 6K resolution.

Gimbal

Gimbals or cardanic suspensions are brackets that can be screwed onto almost any camera system. These compensate for vibrations and oscillations, but are not nearly as stable as the gyro-stabilized systems.
