filmfriend is a video-on-demand film portal especially for public German-speaking libraries . The founder and operator is Potsdamer filmwerte GmbH.

Functionality and content

Registered readers of participating libraries can log in directly via the filmfriend website or via the portal of the respective library . An ID number and password are required for this.

The focus of the film offer is on German classics, documentaries, children's series and international art house cinema . According to the company, emphasis is placed on "a clear and well-selected range of high-quality content". Since the start in Berlin in July 2017, over 140 public and university libraries have decided to cooperate with filmfriend (as of April 2020).

Filmfriend was awarded the jury's “Special Prize for Social Innovations” on December 1, 2017 in Potsdam as part of the Berlin-Brandenburg State Innovation Prize.
