Filmtheater Sendlinger Tor Munich

The Sendlinger Tor film theater was opened in 1913 on Sendlinger-Tor-Platz . It is the oldest still existing (film) theater in Munich. Due to its imposing character, it is considered the “flagship” among Munich cinemas.

history

The cinema was founded by the entrepreneur Carl Gabriel . The opening took place on October 17, 1913. The opulently furnished cinema hall with its impressive ceiling height, columns, boxes and separate entrances was also appreciated by members of the Bavarian royal family. It was visited by Ludwig III. of Bavaria and his son Crown Prince Rupprecht .

From 1928 to 1944 the UFA took over the cinema.

In the detached house with 400 (formerly 750) seats, important premieres take place, it is a popular venue for the Munich Film Festival and is regularly awarded with cinema program awards. It is designed like a small opera house. Originally it even had an orchestra pit .

A café is attached to the cinema. The facade traditionally adorns a hand-painted large-format movie poster that advertises the current main film. The Sendlinger Tor film theater is one of the top 20 percent of all cinema halls in Germany. The cinema projects the films with an HFR-capable digital cinema projector and 6-channel Dolby digital sound onto a 50 m² screen. Today the focus is on art-house films, literary adaptations, upscale mainstream films or traditional film series such as "James Bond".

Significance for the cityscape

The movie theater, which is integrated into a residential and commercial building, has a significant impact on the cityscape. It was built in the reform style by the construction company Heilmann & Littmann . The building was Munich's first reinforced concrete structure . When it opened in 1913, the cinema already had a tier, gallery and boxes as well as hot water heating. Damage caused by World War II was repaired in 1946/47. The importance is shown by the entry in the Bavarian monument list.
