history

QNB Finansbank

Hüsnü Özyeğin founded Finansbank on October 26, 1987, and in 2003 the National Bank of Greece acquired a minority stake.

The National Bank of Greece bought the remaining stake from Hüsnü Özyeğin for an estimated US $ 3 billion . Özyeğin originally wanted to buy this amount of shares in NBG, but these were not available on the market at the time. In the course of the Greek financial crisis, the purchase of Finansbank should prove to compensate NBG: While in 2010 NBG made a loss of 159 million euros in Greece due to large write-downs, Finansbank generated a profit of 251 million euros.

Since the NBG Group concentrated on Southeastern Europe and withdrew from Central Europe due to the high market saturation , the branches of Finansbank there were not part of the takeover. They have been renamed Credit Europe Bank and are still wholly owned by the Özyeğin group of companies. Since then, Finansbank has been active in 6 countries, including Russia and Malta .

In 2014, the bank acquired the 170 m high-rise Krystal Kule , built a few years earlier, for EUR 303 million to use it as its new headquarters.

In December 2015, NBG announced that it would sell its Turkish subsidiary Finansbank to QNB from Qatar for EUR 2.75 billion.
