Financial administration (Austria)

The financial administration in Austria is part of the public administration and is divided into the tax administration and the customs administration.

The highest authority of the financial administration is the Federal Ministry of Finance and is responsible for the financial interests of the Republic of Austria by collecting taxes and contributions. Subordinate organizational units are the tax offices, the tax office for fees, transfer taxes and gambling, the customs offices, the large company audit, the financial police and the tax investigation department.

The financial administration consists of the following units:

  • Federal Ministry of Finance (divided into sections, groups, departments and units) including the tax and customs coordination responsible for the control and support of the tax offices and customs offices (divided into departments)
  • Forty tax offices (divided into the team areas of organization, information center, general taxation, company taxation and auditing, tax protection, specialist area including criminal case office)
  • A tax office for fees, transfer taxes and gambling (divided into teams)
  • The customs administration (nine customs offices, divided into the team areas of organization, customer team, auditing, customs investigation, tax protection, specialist area; some customs offices are equipped with special competence centers, e.g. for commercial legal protection in connection with product piracy)
  • A large company audit (divided into teams)
  • A tax investigation (divided into teams)
  • A financial police (divided into teams)
